Gaby Stevens has learned to expect very little from her visits to the cave.

Four years after the experience that changed her life, the place remains stubbornly ordinary. Its walls hold no symbols, its passages offer no answers, and the strange sound she remembers has never returned.

On August 29, Gaby sets aside her research for an evening and returns to the cave once more. With time to explore a section she has never properly examined, she decides to go a little farther than usual.

There is nothing unusual about the passage ahead. Nothing to suggest she will find anything different from what she has found before.

For now, Gaby is simply continuing a search she has never been able to finish.
